SEPTEMBER
MEETING…
Don't
forget the next meeting...an important one because it's our annual election.
The present slate of officers have agreed to remain in office for yet another
year. However, nominations will be open from the floor, in the event
someone would like to give them some competition.
Other
items on the tentative agenda:
a. picnic review
b. repeater report
c. VE test session?
d. October fish fry chairperson
e. Upcoming activities
f. other business
The
meeting will start at 7pm on Thursday September 13th
in the cafeteria of BAMC Menominee. We'll see you there.
Members
of the Bay Area Wireless Association will meet at 6:30pm prior to the M&M
ARC meeting on September 13th. Agenda items include dues, and plans
for the March 2002 Wisconsin QSO Party. Any
M&M ARC members interested in HF, Dxing, or Contesting are welcome to join
BAWA. Come early for the BAWA
meeting September 13th, or check into the BAWA net any Monday evening
at 7:00pm on 146.550 MHz.
FISH FRIES RESUME IN SEPTEMBER…
Our
famous fish fry Fridays will again be on our social calendar. Bob, AA9IB, has
agreed to take charge of our September event, and has set this one up for Friday
September 7th at Little River CC, in Marinette. Social hour starts at 5:30
with dinner around 6:30pm. Bob needs your reservations by Sept. 6, so let him
know if you are planning to attend, if you have not already done so.
Attending without a reservation is strongly discouraged, as it would be at any
club social function. We're looking forward to an October "social
director", so we can continue these popular events.

Our
annual picnic was held on Sunday August 26th, amidst beautiful sunny weather at
Henes Park. Sixty-five people attended the event, the largest in recent years.

Everything
went very well, with great camaraderie, great food, and of course, great
weather. A big thank you to Lynne, N8OSK, and Joan Callow for chairing
this year's successful picnic.

Tom,
N8LHB, and Bob, AA9GZ are to be commended for frying the burgers and brats.
And, all the wonderful cooks who gave us that delicious food.

Thanks
for coming, and for those that were unable to attend, you missed out on one
great Sunday afternoon. Next years picnic will also be held at Henes Park.
Plan to join us then.
*Note*
More pictures of the event are on the KG8CX/M&M ARC
website.
The M&M Amateur Radio Club was highly visible at this year’s Menominee Waterfront Festival. W8PIF was put on the air as part of the National Lighthouse Weekend, activating the Menominee Pier Lighthouse from the Marina Park Grounds.

Wisconsin
ARRL Section Manager, Don Michalski, W9IXG, made the drive from Madison to join
us. He’s shown at left, along
with KG8CX and K8IR.
Club
members logged 171 contacts, mainly on 20 meters, mainly on 20 meters and 2
meters.
Requests
for certificates from our special event station continue to show up in the club
PO box. While they have slowed considerably, some still trickle in.
We have received over 50 requests so far. Jeff, N9PQU, is designing the
certificate and card, and will be sending out them out soon.
Dave,
NS9R, shown below, was among the club members who took turns at the controls.

Eric,
KG9GH, shown below, set up an APRS (Automatic Radio Positioning System)
demonstration.

Thanks
to everyone who helped out in any way with making this year’s special event
station another success.
ANNUAL
MEMBERSHIPS COMING UP
Since
our new year starts in October, it's time to start thinking of renewing your
membership in the club for 2001-2002. There will again be no change in the
dues...still $15 for individual memberships, and $22.50 for families. You can
pay your dues to Lynne at the meeting, or send a check to our PO box.:

Taking
care of this matter by the Christmas party or sooner, will be greatly
appreciated.
HAM OF THE
YEAR NOMINATIONS…
It
is be time to start thinking of who will be the recipient of the 2001 Ham of the
Year award. Nominations will be solicited starting in November, with the
tabulations and final choice made at the Christmas party in December. A
nomination form will appear in the October Ground Wave. Remember, think of
what the individual's accomplishments have been, his/her contributions to the
advancement of amateur radio within the local area, and to the club in
particular, as a basis for your selection.
REPEATERS
SOUNDING GREAT…
Both
of our repeaters have performed flawlessly for some time now. The noise on
the 147 seems to have disappeared, and we can enjoy the extended range that the
400 foot level on KC8DOA's tower affords us.
The 444.075 is also working great, with lesser range from the 100 foot level
atop BAMC in Menominee, but still very accessible within about a 15 mile radius
of the twin cities. However, it is a lonely machine, with not much use.
If you have the capability, give out your call, and perhaps we can clean out the
cobwebs, and get it smiling again.
(From
an ARRL Bulletin)
The
FCC says the fee for a new or renewed Amateur Radio vanity call sign will drop
to $12 on September 10. Applications received on or after that date will be
subject to the new fee. The current vanity call sign fee is $14.
The FCC proposed the lower fee last March in a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for
the Assessment and Collection of Regulatory Fees for FY 2001. The FCC has
estimated that 8000 applicants will apply for vanity call signs in the current
fiscal year.
Earlier this year, the FCC also put paper and electronic vanity call sign
applications on an equal footing in terms of processing priority. The FCC used
to give priority to electronic applications for vanity call signs.
FCC rules stipulate refunds for applicants who inadvertently overpay a
regulatory fee. Applicants who determine that they overpaid a vanity fee may
request a refund in writing. Requests seeking a ''Vanity Fee Overpayment
Refund'' go to FCC, 1270 Fairfield Rd, Gettysburg PA 17325-7245. Refund requests
should indicate the date of application, the total fee paid, and the total
refund owed.
