TECHNICIAN CLASSES TO
BEGIN IN JANUARY…
Classes begin 1/08-1/09
Members of the M&M ARC will again be teaching classes to help
prospective hams achieve their technician class licenses.
This winter, classes will be taught in two different locations.
Saturday classes will be held at the Stephenson Public Library in
Marinette. On Sundays the same curriculum will be taught at the Fire
Department in Wallace, Michigan. Classes will start at 9am at both locations.
CW instruction will be offered as well for those wishing to study for
the 5 wpm test. Jim, KC8YZA, and
Pete, AB9PJ, two successful graduates of last year’s classes have been doing
the organization work, and many others have volunteered to teach one or more
sessions. All instructors are invited
to participate on the instructors’ net on the 147.000 repeater Sunday
evenings at 8pm following the M&M ARC weekly net.
If you know someone who would like to take the class, please
contact KC8YZA or AB9PJ. The
classes are free, but students are encouraged to purchase a copy of the text,
“Now You’re Talking” by the ARRL.
NEW CALL..
Congratulations
to Tony Del-Genio of Marinette on his new call, KC9GXQ. Tony passed his test
at our December VE session. Tony has checked into the Sunday net. Welcome!
The SMASH Net, (Sunday Morning Amateur
Social Hour) is an HF net that originates in Traverse City, MI
and has many members from throughout the lower peninsula and a few u-pers such
as KG8CX of Menominee, and KC8UMB of Manistique. Since several of
the club members have newly obtained HF capabilities on 75 meters, and others
planning to upgrade, perhaps you might consider giving this net a listen, and
subsequently check in. It runs on 3.935 every Sunday at 8am CST. (9am
EST), and is a good net to check on your signal report for this band.
The net control is Frank, W8TVQ, and he runs the net from Traverse City.
Some very interesting people are regular check ins. Last summer, a YL
from Germany was sailing her boat throughout Hudson Bay, Georgian Bay, and
Lake Huron, and checked in regularly. One or two others are
sailing enthusiasts and have HF on their watercraft.
The UP Net (Upper Peninsula) is a 7 day
a week HF net on 3.920 (3.921 summer months). They run at 4:00pm CST 7
days a week, with a Sunday noon net at 11:00 CST. The
"pre-net" begins at 3pm CST, during which time you can get your call
placed on the regular net, or simply wait until a call for check ins is made
on the regular net every 15 or so minutes. Various net controls can be
heard each day. It is also a good place to receive or originate traffic,
since it is registered on the National Traffic System.
Another good net is the Wisconsin Sideband Net on
3.985 daily at 5:30pm, also a part of the National Traffic System.
If you're interested in weather, and want to hear
conditions throughout Wisconsin and the midwest, listen to the Badger Weather
Net (BWN) daily from 6am to 7:15am on 3.985. You can also check in with
or without traffic (meaning weather info). KG8CX is a member of this
net, which is directed by Don Michalski, W9IXG of Madison. It also
feature a number of different net controls. You can register and become
a part of this net, meaning your reports are taken and sent, along with dozens
of others to the National Weather Office at Sullivan, WI for use in plotting
weather trends and forecasts, and keeping track of weather history.
Another early morning net is held each morning at 7am
on 3.932.50 with many check ins throughout the state, UP, and elsewhere.
AA9IB, KC8YZA, AA9JH are the locals who use this net to "wake up"
each day. Many of the same hams can also be heard on the
"Expo Net" at 12:30pm daily on 3.925.
There are many other HF nets and 2 meter ones as well
for interested hams to consider.
HARA SWAP AND SHOP…
The Hiawatha
Amateur Radio Association will hold their 2005 Swap and Shop on Saturday
February 5th at the Negaunee Township Hall. This swap event is
regarded by many as the best in the U.P. In addition to 40 tables of
equipment, there are many door prizes, and a raffle drawing. Doors
will open at 10:00am(EST) and the event is scheduled to end at 3:00pm (EST).
Admission is only $4.00.
The Negaunee Township Hall is located a mile south the of US 41-M35 intersection between Marquette and Negaunee. The talk in frequency will be the 147.27+ repeater, using the K8LOD callsign. For more information and a map check this web page:
